Abstract

The title of my thesis is „Medical and technological alterations for 21st century people“. The focus of this paper is to question whether the existing international human right law is a good basis for the afirmation of human enhancement. Four documents were explored in that regard: The Oviedo Convention, The Declaration of Helsinki, International Convention on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Besides the juridical regulation, the topic of human enhancement is explored through two opposed views – transhumanism and bioconservatism. Also, there's emphasis on distinguishing between interventions whose aim is to cure, prevent death or prevent ilness (through methods such as prenatal selection) from interventions where the goal is to enhance the capabilities and/or characteristics of a human being („designer babies“).
