Abstract
Branko Ružić is one of the most prominent Croatian sculptors of the 20th century. Although he used various materials, his sculpture is mostly associated with wood, which he used to create his large and significant oeuvre. He began his work in the 1950s as one of the representatives of the artistic movement that sought to affirm modernist practices, but also to keep the connection with the local tradition. His sculpture corresponds to the movements of European modernism and his sculptures are examples of purified and reduced forms, full masses, accentuated architectural, but rustic, unfinished processing. Wood as a material allowed him to create by deducting from the whole and it was a good medium for his large volumes and geometric shapes. He was particularly interested in the multiplication of forms and groups, so he dealt with themes of groups and sequences in many of his sculptures. The scope of his themes was especially noteworthy, as well as the ambivalence in the meaning of his works. His oeuvre comprises a considerable part of work in wood, which is notably praised by the critics.
