Abstract

This paper will analyze Elena Ferrante’s Neapolitan novels – L'amica geniale, Storia del nuovo cognome, Storia di chi fugge e di chi resta and Storia della bambina perduta – in the context of feminist literature. To accomplish this task we will borrow Rita Felski’s broad definition of feminist literature, which encompasses all texts that reveal a critical awareness of women's subordinate position and of gender as a problematic category. We will focus on ways in which the strategies and concerns of second wave feminism are articulated in the novels, with the emphasis on two currents dominant in Italy at the time: the autonomous Lotta Feminista and feminism of difference of Rivolta Femminile. A key text for this phase of feminist theory and practice is Simone de Beauvoir’s The Second Sex, whose influence can be detected in the ideas of personal as political, gender as a social construct, and the idea, very important in the Italian context and for feminism of difference, of sex difference between men and women as the fundamental difference and the basis of each hierarchic power relation. Keeping this in mind, we will analyze the material and symbolic oppression over women and the ways in which capitalism and patriarchy are mutually constitutive.
