Abstract

The verbotonal theory is multidisciplinary. It consists of general linguistic theory, theory of audiology and neuro-psychological theory of hearing perception. On one hand it’s being used in process of learning foreign language or mother tongue, and on the other hand as special approach to hearing and speech rehabilitation. In center of verbotonal approach is person as individual with possibilities to create, and with all its potentials and resources. By following basic principles of the verbotonal theory it’s possible to define techniques and approaches unique to hearing and speech diagnostics and rehabilitation, as well as methodological-and-didactical approaches to children with hearing and speech disabilities within educational institutions. Using precise diagnostic techniques individual plan of rehabilitation within verbotonal approach is being defined. Diagnostics and rehabilitation within verbotonal approach is being performed by different subject matter experts (General Practitioners, Specialists of Neurology, Specialists of Otorhinolaryngology, Psychologists, Physiotherapists, Phonetics, Speech Therapists, Social Workers, etc.). Objectives of this paper are to present basic foundation of the verbotonal approach to all future and current experts of different profile willing to get deeper into this topic, and develop ideas for some future researches that will restart development of this practice. Furthermore, this paper gives opportunity to people that are in close contact with different anomalies and unexpected development of speech and hearing to gain some basic knowledge about generally accepted hearing and speech development, and to find idea where to seek for help.
