Abstract

This study examines so-called complex predicate constructions (see Goldberg 1996), i.e. investigates cases in which the predicate is expressed by a verb and a noun bound together into a unique syntactic-semantic whole, where the (relatively) same propositional content can often be expressed by a simple verb which is congenial to the noun (e.g. dati zapovijed ‘give an order’ – zapovjediti ‘order’, baciti pogled ‘take a look’ – pogledati ‘look’, voditi razgovor ‘have a talk’ – razgovarati ‘talk’). In the first section of the paper, I present a brief overview of existing theoretical approaches adopted by traditional South Slavic linguistics (Radovanović 1977, Topolińska 1982, Petrović 1988, Silić & Pranjković 2005). The second section of the paper addresses the approaches adopted by traditional and modern English linguistics (Poutsma 1929, Jespersen 1942, Wierzbicka 1982 et al.) and makes mention of a contrastive-linguistic approach to Croatian and English complex predicate constructions (Gradečak-Erdeljić & Brdar 2012), and also references a psycholinguistic approach to Croatian complex predicate constructions (Peti-Stantić, Japirko & Kežić 2016). In the fourth section of the paper, I present the results of a psycholinguistic research on Croatian complex predicate constructions in which their semantic features and their productivity and schematicity were examined.
