Abstract

Today, the information in digital form is unavoidable part of everyday life. Given the importance and sensitivity of certain information, great efforts are invested in security of the information. Since information in digital form is stored in files on computers or in databases, information security includes both physical protection of the hardware and software protection. Software protection would not be possible without cryptography. The aim of this diploma thesis is to review certain segments of the information security provided by software with special focus on cryptography. The usage of symmetric and asymmetric cryptography algorithms has been studied along with hash algorithms, digital signatures, certificates and role those algorithms have in data protection. For illustration, detailed description of inner workings has been explained for some of the algorithms: DES, RSA, SHA-1 and DSA.
