Abstract
The goal of this thesis is to show most common types of digital file formats for three most common types of content, likely to be subject of digitization projects in libraries and archives. These are text as the most likely one, still pictures and sound. The analysis was based on Library of Congress guidelines for digitization and LOC Recommended Formats Statement 2017-2018 document. Independently of the content type to be digitized for long term preservation they all share some common criteria that must be met when deciding on the most appropriate format – the format has to be widespread and adopted, documentation must exist and has to be maintained, the format has to be free to use in terms of intellectual property and licenses and the amount of metadata that describe content details has to be sufficient for the purpose. In addition to these criteria, every content type sets additional set of criteria that is specific for that content type.
