Abstract

The thesis analyses the oeuvre of the feminist artist Sanja Iveković through the lens of curatorial practices from the 1970s till today. The emphasis is put on curatorial and art interventions in Zagreb, which were the forerunner of contemporary practices, as well as on the more detailed analysis of the work of curator Želimir Koščević, who played a significant role in promoting young artists and activities of SC Gallery by organizing a number of unconventional exhibitions. The thesis mentions the role of alternative exhibition spaces, such as RZU Podroom, which was using different concepts of display and managed to establish new relations between artists and audience. The framework of the emergence of the independent cultural scene in Croatia is also mentioned, along with the description of the roles and challenges of independent curators. Apart from the methodology of curatorial practices, the thesis explores relations between the private (personal) and the public (political) in the work of Sanja Iveković and describes her activities in public space, defining it as a space of critique of the political scene. The thesis looks into retrospective exhibition Sweet Violence held in MoMA in 2011, which is outlined through museum functions. Analysis closes with an overview of an artist's work displayed at international exhibitions of contemporary art: Manifesta 2, Documenta 11, Documenta 12, Documenta 13 and Documenta 14.
