Abstract
This study aimed to examine the perception of people depending on their choice of the last name after marriage, their gender, assessor's gender and assessor's attitude about gender roles. The study was conducted using online questionnaire on the total of 1036 participants; 655 women and 381 men, 29 years old on average. They were randomly assigned to one of the six experimental groups. In every experimental group, participants were shown one scenario, where the gender of the main character was varied (man or woman) as well as their choice of the last name upon marriage (kept their own last name, hyphenated the partner's last name, took only partner's last name). Participants have assessed the given person on a series of typically masculine and typically feminine traits, and then completed the questionnaire about their own view on gender roles as well as the sociodemographic questionnaire. Results show that there is a difference in perception of men and women considering their choice of the last name after getting married and that perception depends on assessor's gender and his/her attitude toward gender roles.
