Abstract
Open adoption is a type of adoption which includes ongoing contact and information exchange between a child, adoptive and birth family. In Croatia, only closed adoption is allowed by law and there is no research on attitudes toward open adoption. The aim of this research was to examine attitudes of prospective adoptive parents toward open adoption and their relationship with age, reasons for adoption and personality traits. Prospective adoptive parents (N = 81; 75.3% women) participated in the study, age 28 to 57 years. Results suggest that prospective adoptive parents in Croatia are prone to believe in myths about open adoption. Attitudes of middle age participants were more negative than attitudes of younger age participants. Reasons for adoption were not in statistically significant correlations with attitudes toward open adoption. Age and reasons for adoption did not have interactive effects on attitudes. Among the personality traits in the Big Five model, only conscientiousness had a statistically significant correlation with attitudes toward open adoption, where prospective
adoptive parents with higher conscientiousness had more negative attitudes toward open adoption. These results contribute to a better understanding of the attitudes of prospective adoptive parents toward open adoption and provide guidelines for future research and practical activities in preparing for adoption.
