Abstract
In this master's thesis, we will do a review of the standard and experimental methods of determining the age at death. First, we will differentiate between biological and chronological age. Furthermore, an overview of papers related to ageing and age at death determination of an individual in an archaeological and modern context has been made. Standard methods are divided into age groups (from fetal to adult period), as changes in skeletal and dental remains differ depending on the time or age group and the anatomical position in which they are visible. Therewith, experimental methods that can be used independently of the age group are described and divided into microscopic/histomorphometric, amino acid racemization, multifactor method and DNA methylation. Each of the methods described has been accompanied by research that has led to (and still contribute to) advancement in the field of forensic anthropology and the determination of age at death.
