Abstract
The first part of this thesis introduces an overveiw of anthropology of pregnancy and birth as a subfield within a wider field of medical anthropology. The second part of the thesis analyses data obtained through qualitative research, the purpose of which was to obtain personal experiences and attitudes of mothers I interviewed as well as attitudes of medical professionals I interviewed regarding the characteristics of the Croatian maternal care system. The research was conducted primarily through a semi-structured interview with women (mothers) and several obstetricians and midwives. The results of research and the analysis of the data obtained provide insights into the quality of the maternal care as experienced by the receivers of that care, and the comparison of current obstetric practices with scientific evidence poses important questions from the viewpoint of anthropological perspective in the analysis of the subject.
