Abstract

The subject of this master's thesis is the analysis of the role and significance of the traditional theatre in Ottoman Empire. In the introductory part of the paper, there is a brief analysis of the development of dramatic arts in the Ottoman Empire, on the examples of the three most prominent traditional theatrical genres: meddah, karagöz and orta oyunu. Then follows the main part of the paper, in which the theoretical frame for the study of theatrical art form from a sociological point of view is set. Three major social roles of the traditional Ottoman theatre are highlighted: the role of popular entertainment, didactic means and the means of social criticism. The aim of this paper is to emphasize the social role of the traditional theater which was used in the Ottoman Empire as one of the main media for the conveyance of news, culture, entertainment and socially oriented criticism.
