Abstract

There has been an increase in interest for the possibility and potential of museums to contribute to formal education in achieving educational goals and expected outcomes in Croatia since the educational reforms have been announced and partially implemented in the Croatian educational system (HNOS) because one of its goals is to include more outside classroom teaching and alternative methods of teaching. The goal of this paper is to contribute to the discussion with a historical review of the development of the public museum with an emphasis on its educational role and to argue that there is a need for a better cooperation between schools and museums. Also, a qualitative research has been conducted which included a high school sociology class in the Ethnographic Museum in Zagreb and an evaluation of its success. The aim of this research was to showcase how museums can be of use to high school sociology in achieving regulated educational goals and to investigate which teaching methods and techniques are most suitable for this type of teaching outside the classroom. Additionally, the announced changes regarding the educational reforms implemented on the primary school level based on HNOS haven’t been implemented on the high school level which means that high school subjects are still carried out based on the outdated curriculum form 1994. For this reason the current state of high school sociology in Croatia is discussed in this paper as well as the state of high school sociology in general since this is a school subject that is seldom part of a curriculum in other countries
