Abstract
The paper gives an overview of the main stances in ethical discussions on patriotism. First it outlines the argument of a strict liberal moral that rejects patriotism as morally unacceptable because it can not be reconciled with the demands of the impartiality and universality set by the liberal moral. After that, the opposite, communitaristic point of view is expressed, which rejects the idea that patriotism should or can be judged from a liberal standpoint and considers patriotism morally mandatory. As „the third way“ between these two stances comes moderate patriotism, which acknowledges and accepts the demands of the liberal moral, but believes it is morally acceptable to act patriotically in some situations. Finally, the paper examines the idea of ethical patriotism, which argues that there is a form of special care for one's country that would be considered morally mandatory by standards of liberal morality.
