Abstract
Power is a key construct in social sciences, and in psychological research, the power motive has been linked to an array of different criteria. However, only recently have approaches to personality research tried to differentiate and integrate its explicit and implicit aspect. The aim of this study was to contribute to those efforts by examining the relationship of explicit and implicit power motivation in explaining the variance of three criteria: social dominance orientation, environmentalism and leadership role occupancy. The research was conducted on a convenience sample of (N=184) Croatian employees, who solved a set of instruments through an online survey. Implicit power motive (measured by the Conditional reasoning test for power; James et al., 2012) showed a significant, yet small correlation with the explicit power motive (measured by Motivation to lead scale; Chan and Drasgow, 2001). Both measures had a positive correlation with leadership role occupancy, and only the explicit power motive with social dominance orientation. Hypotheses concerning explicit and implicit power motive relationship (both additive and interactive) in predicting criteria were not confirmed in either of the analyses.
