Abstract
The thesis gives an overview of archaeological sites that can be, more or less precise, determined as eremitic dwellings and monasteries at the territory of central Dalmatia in the period from Late Antiquity to the final years of the Early Middle Ages. The sites are brought in a catalogue, as well as the objects distinguished as relevant for the explanation of the monastic context. Several aspects describing circumstances of the occurence of the monastic complexes are being argued through problematic of its research, location and attribution of eremitic dwellings and monasteries, the relationship between monasteries and Antique heritage, as well as the role of the monasteries as economic and cultural centres. The context of the emergence and development of monastic movement as well as dissemination of models to almost every place of the known world is given through the insite of the state of research of the places outside Central dalmatia where presence of hermits and monastic communities has been noted in determined time frame, particularly the places that had a key role in the formation of this movement. The data from the sources is compared to the results of the archaeological excavations, and the role of the social elites as an important factor of the economical aspect of the monastic foundations is being reassessed.
