Abstract
An adequately developed reading skill is one of the basic goals of the modern education systems. Starting points in the institutional development of reading competence are formed while keeping in mind the accepted description of reading comprehension. This article provides an overview of the reading definitions, i.e. more important aspects of reading comprehension. The aim of this article is, firstly, to create an overview of the reading definitions and, secondly, to explain some of the concepts in the modern teaching practices which are applied in the development of reading competence.
