Abstract
This masters thesis describes the work of a clinical phonetician as a teaching assistant to a child with a behavioural disorder. Behavioural disorders are omnipresent nowadays, yet there is still a lack of information about the topic in regular schools. The theorethical part of this masters thesis is comprised of several parts: the description of the educational system in Croatia, the description of children with behavioural disorders, the description of children with other disorders, the representation of working in class and the workplace of a teaching assistant in general, his/her duties and the reasons why a clinical phonetician specifically is important in the execution of this job. The focus of this thesis is the descriptive analysis of three audio tapes recorded in a period of one month. The analysis itself is divided into two stages in order to gain insight into the child’s progress. The goal of this thesis is to describe a clinical phonetician’s work with a child with a bihevioural disorder with an emphasis on the child’s auditory processing and the evaluation of progress during one month. It has been shown that there are some improvements of the child’s auditory processing, his reactions and the speed of his answers to given questions. It can be concluded that working with a clinical phonetician in class has been helpful for the child and that it should be continued with an appropriate rehabilitation to achieve even greater results.
