Abstract
This thesis comprises five annotated translations, accompanied by a discussion. Three translation have been produced from English into Croatian (Cultures and Organizations: Software of the Mind. Intercultural Cooperation and Its Importance for Survival by Geert Hofstede, A University Education by David Willets, and several Cochrane medical reviews) and two from Croatian into Englsih (texts for the Archeological museum in Zagreb from Vodič antičke zbirke and excerpts from the novel Društvene igre by Andrija Škare). Translations are accompanied by glossaries of terms, lists of resources and endnotes discussing specific problems and translation solutions. The discussion focuses on challenges in translation in connection to register. First, a general presentation of the concept of register is offered followed by the description of its importance in connection to Translation Studies. Furthermore, three register variables – field, mode and tenor and their importance for translation are discussed in more detail. Finally, the importance of register in connection to translation of literary and non-literary texts is illustrated with the aid of examples from the annotated translations.
