Abstract

The main objective of this study was to determine whether there are gender differences in ideal partner and ideal relationship preferences. Next problem concerned the correlation between ideal partner and ideal relationship factors. The last problem concerned the influence of the size of discrepancy between ideals and current partner and relationship on relationship satisfaction. The study was conducted on 318 participants, aged 18 to 37 years, who are in a romantic relationship (150 men, 168 women). The obtained results show statistically significant gender differences in the factors: warmth of ideal partner, status of ideal partner and intimacy in ideal relationship in which case women on average gave higher ratings. For other factors of ideal partner and ideal relationship (partner attractiveness and passion in relationship) was not obtained statistically significant difference. These results are partially in line with expectations. Analysis of the correlation between ideal partner and ideal relationship factors shows that the factors of ideal partner warmth and intimacy of ideal relationship and ideal partner attractiveness and passion in ideal relationship are significantly related. These results were expected. As expected, the greater discrepancy between the characteristics of the ideal and the current partner and ideal and current relationship was associated with lower relationship satisfaction. This trend, along with some deviations, can be observed at all factors of partner and relationship characteristics.
