Abstract
The aim of this study was to establish the predictive value of depression and psychosomatic symptoms for the length of life in the elderly but also the capacity of sex, education and selfperceived health status to predict the length of life. The sample of participants consisted of 124 elderly persons, living in the Home for the elderly and disabled Trnje in Zagreb. The first point of measurment was done in 1995 (Matulić, 1995) by individual structured interviews. The second point of measurement was conducted 15 years later. In the hierarchical regression model neither depression nor psychosomatic symptoms were significant predictors of length of life in the elderly and neither were their sex, education or self-reported health status. The presence of psychosomatic symptoms and depression was shown to be highly correlated in the elderly (r=0,69, p<0,01).
