Abstract

The goal of our research was to determine the relationship between blind and constructive patriotism and to evaluate how blind and constructive patriotism relate to personal self-esteem, collective self-esteem, study program and gender. 111 students attending the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb (majors in psychology and sociology) and 112 students attending the Faculty of Science in Zagreb (majors in biology and geography) participated. They were split into two categories determined by their faculties. Female participants slightly outnumbered the males (making up for 58% of the total sample). Participants were required to complete a battery of questionnaires which included the Personal Self-esteem Scale (Rosenberg), Collective Self-esteem Scale (Luthanen and Crocker) and the Blind and Constructive Patriotism Scale (Schatz et. al). We have found our subjects had scored high on personal self-esteem, moderately high on collective self-esteem, relatively low on blind patriotism and relatively high on constructive patriotism. We have found a low positive correlation between personal and collective self-esteem. Blind and constructive patriotism weren’t correlated. The correlation between both types of patriotism and collective self-esteem was positive and moderately high, while neither type of patriotism had a significant correlation to personal self-esteem. Faculty of Science students scored higher on both types of patriotism. Gender differences weren't found to be statistically significant.
