Abstract

The aim of this research was to investigate beliefs about association between parenting styles and family relations of parents (n=91) and nonparent students (n=89). Participants were presented with short descriptions (vignettes) of four different parenting styles (authoritative, permissive, authoritarian and uninvolved-neglecting). For each parenting style they reported, on the Index of family relations, their beliefs about quality of relations in described family. The results indicated that family relations were viewed as most positive for authoritative style, then for permissive and authoritarian style, and as most negative for uninvolved-neglecting parenting style. Participants viewed family relations as more positive when fathers rather than mothers were presented as authoritative and authoritarian. Male participants viewed family relations as more positive than did female participants for authoritarian parenting style. Parents rated family relations more positively than did students for authoritative and permissive style. Male students viewed family relations as more positive than did fathers for authoritarian style, and as more negative than fathers for authoritative and permissive style. Mothers reported family relations to be more positive than did female students for authoritarian an authoritative style. Fathers and mothers did not differ in their perceptions of family relations for different parenting styles. Male students reported family relations to be more positive than did female students for authoritarian and uninvolved-neglecting style.
