Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the contribution of inaccurate beliefs about healthy romantic relationships, dating violence recognition and acquired gender roles to the explanation of adolescent dating violence. The study included a total of 403 participants in the age range of 18-21 years, and 291 participants (185 males and 218 females) were romantically involved in the past year. Results were collected using the Scale of inaccurate beliefs about healthy romantic relationships, Adolescent gender roles scale, Recognition of violent conduct in romantic relationships scale and Dating violence perpetration and victimization questionnaire. The results showed that females reported more perpetrated psychological and physical violence, while males reported more perpetrated sexual violence and more psychological, physical and sexual violence victimization. Participants who have inaccurate beliefs about healthy romantic relationships report more dating violence perpetration and victimization. Participants who recognize less violent conduct report more dating violence perpetration and victimization. Acquired male gender role was positively associated with perpetrated violence for males, while acquired female gender role wasn’t associated with dating violence for females. Inaccurate beliefs and acquired male gender role were significant predictors of prepetrated violence for males. Dating violence recognition was significant predictor of perpetrated violence both for males and females, and dating victimization for males.
