Abstract

Early research on perfectionism focused on its negative aspects, connecting it with various forms of psychopatology. Although Hamachek back in 1978. distinguished neurotic and normal perfectionism, it has not been until the last 30 years that researchers turned to positive forms of perfectionism. The present study aims to check the invariability of the intolerance of uncertainty construct measured with the IUS on a croatian sample, and to investigate its connections with positive and negative perfectionism. A factor analysis of the IUS has been conducted on the sample of 329 students from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb. Factor analysis indicated that the IUS has a four-factor structure, and the factors were named: Desire for predictability (DP), Uncertainty Distress (UD), Uncertainty Paralysis (UP) and Negative Uncertainty Beliefs (NUB). Negative perfectionism showed moderate positive correlation, and positive perfectionism showed small, albeit significant positive correlation with intolerance of uncertainty. Negative perfectionism showed highest correlations with dimensions UD and UP, and positive perfectionism showed highest correlations with DP and NUB. The results indicate that DP and UP are stable, and UD and NUB are less stable dimensions of intolerance of uncertainty, and that perfectionists in general have a tendency to be less tolerant of uncertainty.
