Gender differences and attitudes towards male/female occupations in Croatian Vocational high school students

Abstract

The goal of this research was to examine the stereotypes of Croatian Vocational high school students towards gender stereotyped occupations. We had 167 high school students participate in our research. The research was conducted by group testing of students in the percentage of egalitarity of their attitudes and their stereotypes towards 58 selected job vocations. The job vocations were taken from the Croatian bureau of employment data collected over 5 years that included employment data on various vocations. The results have shown high egalitarian attitudes among most high school students (85%). Further research unfortunately hasn't shown in all cases those attitudes towards judging male/female occupations. As we have expected choosing certain vocational high schools effects our expectations about male/female occupations. We have confirmed that all students see occupations that demand higher education as more male dominated or split but never as female even in cases when they are female dominated. When judging male/female occupations our more traditional students made stereotypical judgments about occupations defining them as male or female. This expectation wasn’t confirmed in the case of occupations that didn’t bring prestige, better earnings or demanded physical strength to do.
