Abstract

The aim of study was to determine the structure of humor styles and their connection to personality traits and general life satisfaction. The study included 207 persons who participated in three questionnaires, Humor Style Questionnaire (HSQ), IPIP50 Big-Five factor markers, and the SWLS scale of life satisfaction. Principal components analysis confirmed the existence of Affiliative, Aggresive, Self-Enhancing and Self-Defeating humor style. In line with expectations, there is significant correlation between Affiliative and Self-Enhancing and between Aggresive and Self-Defeating humor style. Similar researches conducted in the world showed significant association between humor styles and personality dimensions, but form of their connection is different. Generally the best predictor of three of four humor styles is extraversion, which was expected, but on the other hand, the expected relationship with neuroticism was not confirmed in this study. In addition, Affiliative and Self-enhancing humor style have been found to correlate with subjective life satisfaction, while the other two styles of humor are not connected, despite the expectations of their negative correlation with life satisfaction. Styles of humor are equally good predictors of life satisfaction and personality dimensions, with the proviso that only Self-Enhancing and Affiliative styles of humor are significant predictors of life satisfaction. Between men and women there are differences in the expression of Aggresive humor style, while expression of Affiliative and Aggresive humor styles decreases with age. Despite the limitations, study showed the validity of the assumed structure of humor styles, and their association with personality dimensions and life satisfaction.
