Abstract

The aim of the study was to determine the contribution of sociodemographic factors, medical factors and psychological factors to prediction of health – related quality of life in people with inflammatory bowel disease. Data from 153 subjects: 90 subjects with Crohn's disease and 63 subjects with ulcerative colitis were analyzed by multiple hierarchical regression analysis and discriminate analysis. Sociodemographic, medical and psychological factors accounted for 66 % of variance of health – related quality of life in subjects with inflammatory bowel disease. Disease activity and level of psychological disturbaces (anxiety and depression) were the strongest independent predictors of health – related quality of life in people with inflammatory bowel disease. Health – related quality of life was found lower in relation to higher disease activity and higher level of psychological disturbaces. Perceived social support and coping strategies did not show additional predictive value in regression models. Statistically significant differences between subjects with Crohn' s disease and subjects with ulcerative colitis were found for disease activity assessments on the risk level of 1 %, with subjects with Crohn' s disease indicating lower levels of disease activity, and for disengagement on the risk level of 5 %, with subjects with Crohn' s disease using disengagement less often as a coping strategy.
