Abstract
Acoustic method of locus equation was used to compare coarticulation of the Slovak plosives with respect to the category of voicing and palatality. The study was conducted on plosives/ d, t, ɟ, c / in vowel context of / ɪ, ε, a, o, u /, and is based on a single subject, the native speaker of Slovak language. Aim was to determine whether DAC model reflects the patterns by which tongue dorsum acts in speech production. Locus equation slope data show expressed differences in plosive coarticulation in respect of categories of voicing and palatality, arising from different levels of coarticulatory resistance. The largest slope is obtained by voiceless prealveolar plosive / t /, and the smallest slope by the voiced palatal plosive / ɟ /. The following order is given from highest to lowest coarticulation in VCV sequences / t /> / c /> / d /> / ɟ /. That confirmes that palatality substantially increases coarticulatory resistance. This study confirmed that Slovak voiced plosives are more resistant to coarticulatory effects, because voicing constraints tongue dorsum movement.
