Abstract
For a sample of 657 Internet users, obtained through notices on two high-traffic Internet sites, measures of computer and Internet use were gathered, as well as measures of Pathological Internet Use using the instrument Online Cognition Scale and measures of personality according to the Big Five theory, using a condensed inventory. With slight deviations, the four-factor structure of the Online Cognition Scale was confirmed: a) social comfort, b) loneliness/depression, c) diminished impulse control and d) distraction. Stepwise regression analysis was applied with the goal of predicting results on aforementioned factors, as well as overall Pathological Internet Use, using Big Five personality dimensions, some demographical measures and measures of computer and Internet use. Results indicate that one could speak of a specific personality structure according to the Big Five theory, which might help in predicting overall Pathological Internet Use, as well as its parts - emotional instability (neuroticism), introversion, with high intellect / openness to experiences and low conscientiousness. When discussing Internet services, the best predictors appear to be the user-ascribed importance of chat and multi-player games.
