Abstract

The present thesis discusses the role of conceptual metaphor in English language teaching (ELT). The first part of the thesis gives an outline of cognitive linguistic theories on idiomatic expressions and conceptual metaphor, and proposes an ELT methodology for teaching idioms informed by the tenets of cognitive linguistics. The second part of the thesis is the description of the study on the effect of idiom motivation and grouping idioms based on the same conceptual metaphors on idiom meaning retention.
