Abstract

Final (graduate) work Virtue and education in Plato’s philosophy shows Plato’s understanding of education and virtue and its role in education in dialogues Protagoras, Gorgias, Meno, Politeia, Phaedrus, Sophist and Laws. Plato considered education to be the base of individual’s life and of his coexistence in the community with other people. The entire constitution of a polis is dependant on success of education. In the education of one individual Plato differentiates a couple of basic degrees: musical and gymnastics education, education in mathematics, astronomy, harmony and research of dialectics. Plato differentiates three basic virtues wisdom, bravery and continence which belongs to three parts of human soul. Equity is the fourth basic virtue which includes and combines the rest three and it enables every individual trough highest method of cognition (dialectics), to reach the base of the whole Plato's philosophy and that is The idea of the good and life according to it. The mission of this work is, by studying Plato's works, to explore how according to Plato, one can acquire virtues, and their significance for any kind of further human education, i.e. acquiring skills, either performative ones or productive ones. The thing in this work that unifies philosophy and pedagogy is Plato's comprehension of education, which is significantly connected to pedagogy as a science about education. In Plato's works we can see the unity between philosophy and pedagogy, whereby Plato precedes significant place in the build-up of scientific pedagogy.
