Abstract

At the end of 18th century, a writing of an anonymous author, entitled "Essai sur la révolution ou Souvenirs d'une conversation qui eut lieu au mois de 9bre 1792", found its place among the manuscripts of the Dubrovnik enlightener and francophile Tomo Baseljić (1756-1806). Conceived as a memory of the conversation between a French émigré, with the "anarchist", an active participant of the French Revolution, in the prison of Marseilles at the end of 1792, the manuscript is in fact a political pamphlet which proposes a conspiracy theory similar to those in other pamphlets of the French emigration. Although being the only source of this kind to be preserved in Croatia, it remained forgotten in the archives for some time, and was even misinterpreted, until the research of life and works of Tomo Baseljić conducted by the Croatian Romance linguist Žarko Muljačić in the mid-20th century. With the help of published and unpublished archival material and literature, this thesis presents a multi-level interpretation of the text of this valuable manuscript, as well as the analysis of its content, major political and philosophical ideas and its concepts. It also seeks to explain the political context of its redaction, and in relation to that it offers and supports new opinions on its appearance in Dubrovnik, as well as the guidelines for a research of the repercussions of the French Revolution in the Republic of Dubrovnik and in other Croatian lands.
