Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine the relationships between romantic loneliness and dimensions of self-disclosure towards the romantic partner, and between social loneliness and dimensions of self-disclosure towards the best friend among students, divided by gender. The five dimensions of self-disclosure for both "target" persons (romantic partner and best friend) are intent, amount, valence, depth and honesty/accuracy. The sample consisted of 287 students (128 males and 159 females) of the University of Zagreb of the age between 20 and 25 years. Participants answered the questions of the Scale of social and emotional loneliness (DiTommaso and Spinner, 1993, adapted by Ćubela and Nekić, 2002): the subscales of romantic loneliness and social loneliness and the Revised self-disclosure scale (Wheeless and Grotz, 1976, adapted by Ružić, 2006) for two "target" persons (romantic partner and best friend). Results have shown that men were significantly more lonely than women regarding both romantic and social loneliness. Women tend to self-disclose in a greater extent and more in-depth to their partners than men. Also, they self-disclose to a greater extent, more consciously and deliberately, more in-depth and more honestly than men to their friends. Correlation analysis has shown that for the female subsample, higher levels of romantic loneliness were associated with a less honest, less profound and lesser self-disclosure. For male students, higher levels of romantic loneliness were associated with lesser and a less honest selfdisclosure and with disclosing less positive information about themselves. For female students, higher levels of social loneliness were associated with less intentional, less honest, less profound and lesser self-disclosure. For the male subsample, higher levels of social loneliness were associated with less intentional and less honest self-disclosure and disclosing of less positive information about themselves to their friends.
