Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the predictability of adult attachment dimensions and parental behavior dimensions, as variables of family socialization, and variables of dangerousworld and competitive-jungle beliefs in explaining the variance of right-wing authoritarianism and social dominance orientation. A total of 233 psychology students of the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb responded to Attachment style questionnaire (Feeney, Noller and Hanrahan, 1994; Smojver-Ažić, Jakovcic 2006), Children's Report of Parent Behavior Inventory (Schaefer, 1965; Keresteš, 1999), Belief in a Dangerous World Scale (Altemeyer, 1988; Duckitt, 2001), Belief in a Competitive Jungle Scale (Duckitt, 2001), Right-Wing Authoritarianism Scale (Altemeyer, 1996) and the Social Dominance Orientation Scale (Sidanius and Pratto, 1999). Hierarchical regression analyzes showes that family socialization variables and the two worldview variables account for 21.9 % of the variance in explaining the right-wing authoritarianism and 39.9% of the variance in explaining the social dominance orientation. The contribution of the variable belief in a dangerous world accounts for 11.8% of the variance in explaining the authoritarianism and 2.4 % of the variance in explaining the social dominance orientation, while the contribution of the belief in a competitive jungle variable accounts for 1.8 % of the variance in explaining the authoritarianism and for 15.5% of the variance in explaining the social dominance orientation. Hence the variable belief in a dangerous world proved more predictive in explaining the rightwing authoritarianism and the variable belief in a competitive jungle proved more predictive in explaining the orientation to social dominance.
