Abstract
The subject of this paper is the economic sociology of Georg Simmel, with a focus on his most famous work, The Philosophy of Money. But despite its title which leads us to consider this work as philosophical, it is important to mention that it is also the basis of theoretical works in the field of economic sociology. Therefore, Simmel is one of the most important but neglected figure of classical economic sociology. After a brief and concise review of Simmel’s sociology, the main settings and sociological issues related to money as a social phenomenon and the means of exchange were analysed in this paper. Since Simmel’s theory of money in sociology is hitherto relatively disregarded as well as Simmel himself, especially in Croatia, I think that it was important to demonstrate the relevance of Simmel’s theory to contemporary economic theory and how he explained, with an ‘essayistic’ approach, the role and social power of money as well as the basic structure of modern society that is
reflected in money.
