Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine differences in the expression of old-fashioned and modern sexism in the participant's attitudes regarding the extent of their acceptance to the tradicional gender roles, depending on sex, age and education of the participants. It is expected the expression of sexism and the acceptance of tradicional gender roles to be higher in male, older and less educated participants. The study was conducted on a total of 374 participants from Zagreb and Split. Attitudes have been measured with a questionnaire composed of two different scales: a modified Sex-Roles Egalitarianism scale (SRES) composed of 47 derived particles, and scale of modern and old-fascioned sexism composed of 13 particles. The results showed that with increasing of the acceptance for tradicional gender roles, also increases the participant's expression of modern and oldfashioned sexism. Correlation between acceptance of tradicional gender roles and modern sexism is moderate, and the one between acceptance of tradicional gender roles and olfashioned sexism is high. Male participants show the expression of both types of sexism and the acceptance of tradicional gender roles which is significantly higher than women's. Elderly participants showed higher expression of old-fashioned sexism and the acceptance of tradicional gender roles compared to younger participants. However, although the level of education affects people's attitudes, differences in respondent's opinions due to their education was not found in this study. Interaction of age and education turned out to be significant on the scale of modern sexism.
