Abstract
The aim of this study was to explore the relationship of positive and negative perfectionism, goal orientations (task and ego orientation) and precompetitive trait anxiety in sports, as well as determine the independent contribution of these variables to explaining precompetitive state anxiety even after controlling for the effects of trait anxiety. Data were collected from 175 participants, Croatian male handball, basketball and volleyball players. Measures included Task and Ego Orientation in Sport Questionnaire, Positive and Negative Perfectionism Scale and Endler Multidimensional Anxiety Scales measuring state and trait anxiety. The results showed positive correlation between negative perfectionism, ego orientation and precompetitive trait anxiety, and also, negative correlation of positive perfectionism and task orientation with trait anxiety. Hierarchical regression analysis showed that 29,3 % (p<.01) of state anxiety variance was explained by these variables, but the only statisticaly significant predictor was precompetitive trait anxiety (β=0,520; p<.01), which was entered in the first step of the analysis. After controlling for effects of that variable, dimensions of perfectionism and goal dispositions didn't yield significant aditive contributions.
