Abstract
This paper examines the concept of pharmaceuticalisation using four of the main substantive dimensions (consumerism, (de)regulation policies, profit-aimed activities, pharmaceutical marketing and media impact), all of which are representing same-named process which occurs in context characterized by liberalization of drug production and consumption. Pharmaceuticalisation concept is primary connected with an older concept – medicalization, which had become somewhat obsolete for explaining and understanding the complexities of contemporary pharmaceutical domain. Main goal is analysis of existing attainments from medical sociology together with a purpose of determining relations and differences between pharmaceuticalisation and (bio)medicalization; in theoretical, as well as practical sense. Paper begins with elaboration of the medicalization concept; central part deals with pharmaceuticalisation within aforementioned substantive dimensions, after which similarities between pharmaceuticalisation and securitization is being presented.
