Abstract
This paper shows different methods of transliteration of Cyrillic characters into Latin characters in bibliographic databases. The differences between transliteration and transcription have been presented. The paper draws attention to the problems that Latin databases are faced in the process of transliteration Cyrillic characters into Latin. Several examples of bibliographic databases, which
apply different rules and standards – have been searched (the British Library, the Library of Congress, libraries in Croatia etc.). Searches were made according to certain criteria and the results have been presented. As the result of research there is a rate of application of certain existing rules and standards, which indicates that there is a need for standardization in this area and implementation
of a unified system for transliteration at the international level.
