Abstract

The issue of bilinguals’ (and multilinguals’) personalities has been a much discussed, researched and quite a controversial topic in SLA for the past several decades, and the interest in it seems to be continually growing. The present work deals with the change of personality with the change of language in bilingual (and multilingual) individuals, and presents the results of a research conducted on 77 bi- and multilinguals from varying language backgrounds and of various ages. Having analyzed the data, several patterns of personality change have been found, showing important parameters to be the participants’ general attitude toward their languages, age of onset of learning, context of acquisition, immersion into second language surroundings and level of proficiency. Furthermore, having looked into the participants’ experiences and opinions on the reasons for the occurrence of personality changes, a necessity of taking into account other factors, aside language, has been noted, an especially prominent factor being culture.
