Abstract

In 2006 a new law on legal deposit was passed by the Slovenian Parliament which included web publications too. According to this law, the National and University Library (NUK) was designated as the institution responsible for the collection and long-term preservation of web publications, which are part of Slovenian cultural heritage. As consequence, the development of the web archive became one of its primary tasks. In this regard, the aim of the thesis are the following: to find optimal methods for collecting and preserving web publications; to adjust different international methodologies and create a suitable one for NUK; and last but not least, to present important related aspects of web archiving which could contribute in the decision process concerning optimal solution. Considering various international experiences and practices, special attention to web archive development is given. Specific characteristics of web publications and their influence on the selection of different collection methods and strategies are discussed as well as the possibilities of the existing harvesting tools that could influence the quality of archived materials. Different internet typologies based on the content, form and functionality of web publications are presented. Interesting solutions can be found in the taxonomy, introduced by Internet genre theory. The problems of bibliographic description of web publications and copyright are described. Special emphasis is given to web selection criteria, with reference to the content, form or technical level of web publications. Existing strategies for long-term preservation, including metatada as holders of valuable information for securing access to web contents in the future, are very important. The result of this research is a methodological model based on OAIS (Open Archival Information System) Reference model which will be used for the implementation of NUK's web archiving system. This model will be possible to implement in other environments too.
