Abstract
The object of this study were folk costumes and dress culture in Northern Dalmatia, Croatia. Before approaching this research issue, the founding concept od “folk costume” (“narodna nošnja”) was analysed. As already known, the term itself emerged during 19th century. Here we documented its invention as an amalgamation of reputed manners of folk descriptions in Enlightement style with national ferment under Romanticist movement. Invention of “narodna nošnja”-concept was particularly connected with such representations of North Dalmatia. This characteristical Modern-era category was locally shaped in material terms according to military and social needs at Militargrenze (Vojna krajina). Various cultural practices tied with dress culture are described and analysed further, and cultural phenomenas and processes interpreted as culture consumption and compared with title terms' analysis. Possibilities for refreshed distinction and rehabilitation are suggested, as well as venues for further research.
