Abstract

Present paper brings the results of content analysis of 184 official websites of registered religious gruops in Croatia. The aims of this study were to determine all types of content appearing on the website of religious groups, to examine the frequency of their occurrence and to examine whether there were differences in frequency of publishing different types of content between traditional and non-traditional religious groups. Besides that, the intention was to identify and describe the elements of religion online and online religion in analyzed websites. The results showed that the most frequent type of content was contact information, including address of religious group, phone and fax number, and e-mail address. Then there are lists of group’s meeting places and information about the history of the group in Croatia. Opportunities for user participation in group's life through the Internet are the rarest. That includes the possibility of user registration on the website, leaving comments and evaluation of content, application to the mailing list, online surveys and forums. It has been found that there is a statistically significant difference between traditional and non-traditional religious groups in publishing information about their beliefs and setting up multimedia content on their official websites. In both cases, the occurrence of these types of content is more frequent on websites of non-traditional religious groups. Finally, it turned out that most of the analyzed websites present examples of religion online, and the elements that we have characterized as a manifestation of online religion occur in rare cases, mostly as guestbooks that are recognized by users as a space for interaction.
