Abstract
Acquisition of fricatives represents a stage in speech development at preschool age. Fricatives /f/ and /h/ are acquired first; other complex fricatives should be acquaired until primary school. Fricatives are acquired after the vowels and nasals. In most of the languages from the Indo-European group (10 of them were analyzed), labiodental /f/, glottal /h/ and the alveolars /s/ and /z/ always occur. Children have difficulties with the acquisition of /ʃ/ and /ʒ/ and their irregular forms in speech production, like palatalization of /ɕ/ and /ʑ/ i.e. distortion and substitution voiced fricative with voiceless and vice versa i.e. substitution, are often. Acoustic and statistic analysis done in this research show that there is a difference between the younger and the older preschool kids related to acquisition of fricatives, especially with distinguishing /s/ and /ʃ/. In general, substitution and distortion are the most common ''disorders'' during the development of articulation and it must be pointed out that those ''disorders'' are part of the speech development, while those phonemes that are problematic should be clearly developed before starting the primary school age.
