Abstract

This paper discusses the problem of project management with a focus on the time management of information experts. It is explained how project management consists of mutually related processes which are combined into groups and project management fields and how information sciences adjust project management to their needs. The focus of this paper is given to the information service, a relatively new library service with a goal to meet the user needs and give the users the requested data. While providing such a service, information experts/librarians have to deal with information surplus and, in order to give a quality service, they have to be acquainted with reference materials and consistently update their knowledge. A great importance for balancing the individual approach and contemporary technologies in the libraries is recognized. Traditional reference services rely on verbal communication with the user at the information desk, whereas the online reference services happen remotely through information technologies and have the option of storing the userlibrarian correspondence, for example the online reference service “Ask librarians’. Time management is a technique which organizes the time usage for the purpose of better utilization and efficiency without which the librarians could not do their obligations accurately and timely. Also, the results of a non-structured interview of a small sample of the reference librarians of the Zagreb City Library are presented in order to identify their level of familiarity with time management, obligations, self-time-management and suggestions for improvements in the online and traditional reference services and their time management.
