Abstract

Zoonyms or animal pragmems are words that indicate the names of animals originated on number of specific features for an individual of the same sort. The concept of zoonim is treated as a proper animal name, and not, as it is often thought, as name of the specie. Animal names have three functions: possessive, differential and the fatic-impressive one, with the possessive one as the only constant function. Regarding to its external structure, they can be matphorical or derivative and regarding to its use, they can be primary and secondary. We interpretate them by their content and form. They can be motivated actively and passively, depending on the owner's creativity. According to the semantic analysis, zoonyms are divided into those with a clear or unclear motivation and those with external or internal motivation. Zoonyms with multiple motivations make a special category. In formative analysis, they are classified by their formation processes and they can be formed by transonimization, onimization, derivative processes or by composition. At the end of the paper is a comparison of semantic and formative analysis of Polish and Croatian names of dogs and all the examples of all the collected names.
