Abstract
Everyday intercultural contact and technology development have had a profound impact in the availability of multilingual information. Internet expansion, increasing globalisation and computerisation of global economy as well as technology growth result in a need for quick methods of documentation, website and software translation. Computer and computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools have revolutionised the disciplines of translation, terminology, lexicography and project management due to the possibility of performing various translation and translation-related tasks in an electronic environment. Moreover, these tools have become a prerequisite for translators’ competitiveness and survival on the market. Translation memory (TM) systems, as a part of translation workbenches, have become increasingly popular and widespread translation tools, whose most significant benefits are considered to be increased productivity and translation quality. This dissertation provides an analysis of the extent to which translation technology has impacted the translation discipline and focuses on CAT tools, primarily TM systems. The dissertation also offers an overview of two widely used CAT tools: SDL Trados TagEditor, a translation editor for tagged text, and SDL Translator’s Workbench, a TM system. The practical part of this dissertation presents research, which encompasses using different methods of translation and translation comparison, conducted in order to test the hypothesis that translation memories enhance productivity and translation quality, followed by research results and conclusions.
