Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine how sex, relationship context and three dimensions of evolutionary important mate characteristics (warmth/trustworthiness, attractiveness/vitality, status/resources) interact in choosing a hypothetical partner. 101 female and 102 male students at The University of Zagreb participated in the study. Three hypothetical profiles were constructed using the items of the Short Version of the Partner Ideal Scale (Fletcher et al., 1999). Participants had to assess how inclined they were to take them into consideration as potential intimate partners on a scale from 1 to 7. Participants ratings were then analyzed with a 2 (sex) x 2 (short-term vs. long-term relationship) x (3 trait dimensions of hypothetical persons) ANOVA with the last factor as a repeated measure. The expected sex differences in choosing a partner, regardless of the relationship context and trait dimension of a potential partner, were not obtained. The existance of predicted sex differences in persuing different sexual strategies was also not confirmed. As predicted, men prefer attractive/vital persons as potential partners (regardeless of the relationship contex) to warm/thrustworthy persons, as well as to persons with status/resouces. But, contrary to the hypothesis, women do not prefer warm/thrustworthy persons and persons with status/resouces to vital/attractive ones; these three dimension of mate characteristics seem to be equally important to them. Also, contrary to the prediction, men do not prefer attractive/vital persons as potential partners (regardeless of the relationship contex) more than females, and females do not rate warm/thrustworthy persons and persons with status/resouces more desirable as potential partners than men do; in fact, no sex difference was obtained here. Students, regardless of their sex, as expected, take warm/thrustworty persons and ones with status/resouces more into account as a long-term partners, and attractive/vital persons more as a short-term partners. The hypothesised interaction between sex, relationship context and trait dimension while choosing a mate was not obtained.
